Self Help with a Public Relations Toolbox
from:Help your business and help yourself. Any business needs public relations. Public relations is how you get publicity, create and maintain an image, increase public awareness and extend your market.
The basic element of public relations is the press release. A good press release has a catchy headline that makes people want to read it. These are often people in the media, so you want to make them think you are providing news that they will want to share with their readers and viewers. To improve your chances that a press release will result in media coverage, you want to make sure to make it as easy as possible for editors and publishers to use. That means you want to anticipate any questions the readers may have and make sure to answer them. Media loves personalities and quoting people, so you want to make sure your press releases always include some pithy quotes on interesting subjects.
Publicity is easiest to generate when it is about something new or timely. By all means, use public relations to promote new products. But even if you have nothing new to announce, you can still benefit from publicity. Find an angle in current events that your products address, and publicize that. Offer yourself as an expert who can speak knowledgeably about a specific topic. Use trends you notice in your traffic to speak about trends in a specific area of interest; the media is always interested in trends.
You should also have a press kit available for the media. In addition to copies of your latest press releases, a press kit can include a company history, biographies of your principals, statistics about your traffic, or statistics about the industry you serve. It can also include photos of any products you are promoting.
Announce your latest products and services. Give back to society and your own industry by donating products, services, time or funds to a good cause, a non-profit organization or group through fundraising efforts that you announce through public relations. Check out library books or surf the Internet for articles about public relations, and learn endless ideas for generating press releases and for developing public relations campaigns.
By helping your business grow with public relations, you are helping yourself, too. When you grow, your self-esteem shines, and regardless of the outcome of your efforts, you’re working in a positive direction to create positive awareness and relations. Go get ‘em!
