Understanding The Benefits Of Meditation
Posted by Self Improvement Specialist on May 4th, 2010 filed in BlogrollToo often meditation is misunderstood. When I first mention it first to clients, the normal reaction I get is “Oh that’s little unusual” – or “abnormal”. First things first, it’s very important to be abnormal because there are decades of psychological research that, when taken together, proves that normal people are crazy – their mind controls them, not the other way around. So, when I get the “That’s abnormal” reaction, I tell my clients “That’s the whole point!” – meditation should be an integral part of any personal development program.
I get other reactions. Some will tell me that meditation is against their religious beliefs! However, meditation is not about religion. Some religions or cults may well tell you that specific forms of meditation, which are part of their rituals, have to be practiced in a certain manner and must be practiced exclusively of any other forms of practice. But they’re their rules – they have nothing to do with the underlying principles and benefits of meditation. Telling me you cannot meditate for reasons such as that is like telling me that your religion forbids you learning French, because French prayers are said in French churches!
There are others who point to the spiritual aspects of meditation – saying that such a spiritual journey is not for them. No doubt, meditation can lead to a deeper spirituality, but these people are missing the key point. And that key point is this. Meditation, above all else, is a powerfully effective way of disciplining your undisciplined mind. I’ve already alluded to the fact that research proves that the normal mind controls the normal person – not the other way around – so here’s an effective way to take control of your own mind.
If you don’t take control of your mind, your mind will continue controlling and creating your version of reality – in exactly the same way it has been doing so for years. In other words, if there are aspects of your life that you’re unhappy with, these things are the result of your own state of mind. And if these annoyances, frustrations, stresses or inadequacies persist, you’ll be the one to blame – because now you know that your daily “reality” is the result of your state of mind.
If you’re normal, you are lazy, distracted, obsessed (albeit subconsciously) with the past whilst your conscious mind is obsessed with worrying about the future – to the point that precious little of you is actually here. Unfortunately, if you’re not all here, you’re going to get precious little out of life which, whether you like it or not, is taking place in the here and now. Meditation helps you place your mental focus in the here and now. Meditation enables you come to your senses – literally. Meditation breaks the link between what’s actually happening now and how your mind creates a version (often warped) of reality. Meditation is a mental fitness regime that will enable you change your life.
