Knowing how to defend yourself when confronted with violence is crucial. Good judgment and reasoning are very rudimentary in self defense, yet, sadly, most people are unaware of them. Maybe the best way to defend yourself in a fight is to avoid it at all costs. Walking away, and being the better person, is always advisable if the situation permits it. Following a few basic principles will assist you in defending yourself in a fight or preventing one altogether:

- Leave the confrontation if possible. Most of us have seen scenarios in real life or on television where physical confrontations are avoided by the flight or fight motto. This technique is the best possible defense if you find yourself in a scenario where violence could ensue. If possible, yell for help. There is usually someone around who will hear you yelling someone will always come. Don’t worry about your reputation; worry more about your physical well being. Calling out alone may be enough to make the attacker think twice, and if they stand their ground then it’s time for you to walk or run away.

- Reasoning. The best possible way to defend yourself in a fight is by avoiding the fight. Usually, physical confrontations are preceded by verbal insults and attacks which can get us heated in anger. Don’t fight fire with fire and lose your temper. Saying “Lets not fight over something silly” or “No good can come from this situation” are great detractors from physical violence. Try to make it sound appealing to not physically fight, as opposed to sounding condescending or as if you fear them.

- Phone the police. Though this is probably the slowest method of diffusing the fight, it is a good things to do, at least as a back-up plan. Dial 911 and let them know a fight may occur and you will defend yourself if necessary. If you’re unsure where you are, simply give them some physical descriptions of your surroundings or perhaps the local cross-streets. The quicker they find you the quicker they can halt the physical confrontation.

- Act defensively. In a perfect world, talking things through would always work in avoiding a fight. Unfortunately, many people do not respond to reason. If the other person become very heated and starts becoming physical, avoid hitting them back. Take up a defensive stance position yourself so that the other person is unable to back you in a corner. Often, not being aggressive leads to the other person taking a moment to reflect on their actions and calming down.
